What Your Asthma Doctor Can Do For You

Asthma doctor plans can help you to manage your asthma condition are better than you would be able to on your own, and they can even give you the hope of one day being free of the condition and able to breathe again normally. Although there is no known cure for asthma, it can be controlled adequately in the vast majority of cases and the sufferer can still lead a full life. Doctors who have dealt with this condition many times before are able to use their experience to help you devise the best possible plan to help you manage the condition on a daily basis.

To understand why a doctor's plan is so important, you need to know how asthma can affect the human body. Asthma is a breathing condition which affects the lungs and the airways through which you breathe, and it can force the body to produce phlegm which makes breathing even more difficult. The attacks which a sufferer is subjected to can be fatal, and one the condition is diagnosed there is an immediate need to reduce this risk. This has to be done even before an attempt is made to find out what might have caused the condition in the first place.

The first stage of the asthma management plan will involve an attack on two fronts. Firstly, there will be the provision of a reliever inhaler with corticosteroid drugs. These can help to reduce the severity of an attack and keep the body under control. It does need to be understood, though, that this is not a guaranteed solution and that an attack can be so severe that it does not respond to the inhaler. In this case, there is no option but to summon immediate emergency medical assistance. At the same time, efforts will be made to determine any likely trigger factors so they can be avoided.

These trigger factors can come a variety of sources, some of which are relatively easy to avoid and others which are virtually impossible. You will need to work out, in conjunction with your asthma doctor, any common factors which seem to prevail whenever an attack occurs. Many people have attacks while at work, and certain occupations are known to increase risk. These are not just the obvious ones where you are subjected to exhaust smoke and extreme pollution. Even working in a baker's shop can increase the risk factor.

Once the risk has been managed as well as it possibly can be, attention can be given to the task of making the condition easier to live with on a day to day basis. As well as reducing exposure to risk factors as far as possible, drug treatments will need to be used. These treatments have the potential to calm the body and make it less susceptible to the triggers which are causing the difficulty. In some cases, this can even lead to symptoms disappearing entirely over time. This is most likely to happen with children, which can be an important motivating factor in getting them to follow a doctor's plan.

Your asthma doctor should start the medication at an extremely low dose. Although this is unlikely to bring any relief to the asthma condition, it will test whether the body has any reaction to the drug. If not, the dose can be increased until a benefit is noticed. This way, the intake of the drug is kept at the lowest possible level while still having an effect. This drug use will need to be constantly monitored to make sure that the plan is adjusted if necessary. This is where you will gain from the experience of your asthma doctor.
